The Hindelooper Fair
In 1924 my father, Douwe Douwenga, visited the Hindelooper fair with three friends. After a few pitchers of beer, a jolly mood arose and those friends locked my father in such an old wooden outhouse. My father sat on the toilet for four hours, but he used that time wisely. His only contact with the outside world was the small, diamond-shaped opening in the door. Through it he could see exactly, on the town hall, the coat of arms of Hindeloopen. A golden, galloping deer in a green meadow. Then he was out. Not out of the toilet, but out of the idea for a new licorice. Sturdy, mild salty, diamond-shaped, with a deer. The Hindelooper Ruitjesdrop was soon a resounding success.
