• Sandalwood is an aromatic tree originating from New Caledonia. The sandalwood variety Santalum austro-caledonicum Vieillar thrives on the islands of Ouvea, Maré, Lifou and the lle des Pins. The essential oil is distilled from the bruised heartwood of the 30 to 50 year old sandalwood trees. Logging is limited and there are sandalwood plantations where 3 new trees are planted for every felled tree.
